by Catherine Frances Butrim

Here at FDD, the goal of our founder and lead designer, Randie McConnell, has always been to create elegant custom jewelry and accessory designs that make every woman who enters our studio sparkle and shine in her own unique fashion. But first we need to dispel any misguided notion that FDD’s lustrous strands of pearls, clusters of brilliant gemstones and scads of shimmering Swarovski crystals are luxuries that only the well-heeled bride-to-be or the well-to-do ladies who lunch can afford. Nothing could be further from the truth! At FDD, the opportunity to make a stunning and personal fashion statement is accessible to every woman, whether she plans to wear her works of art walking down the aisle, climbing the corporate ladder, sipping cocktails on girls’ night out or dazzling her significant other on date night.

Now that we’ve cleared up that misconception and have reassured you that a piece (or two or three!) from FDD’s collections is an affordable and well-deserved indulgence, the inevitable question arises. Where do I begin? The answer couldn’t be easier! Simply traipse your stylish self into our new location at Be More Inspired Wedding Studio or call 410.879.9925 to schedule your private consultation. Then round up pictures of key wardrobe pieces, or even your Pinterest boards, and prepare to spend some memorable moments in our studio wrapping yourself in the glamour of over 75 drawers of gemstones, pearls and Swarovski crystals in every imaginable cut and color. It’s pure heaven, we know!

And whether your fun time of personal discovery results in freshwater pearls curled seductively around your wrist, Swarovski crystals flirtatiously swinging from your ears or accenting your sexy updo, a rhinestone and crystal-encrusted belt accentuating the waist of your little black dress, or avant-garde jewels dramatically adorning your neck, one eventuality is certain. No matter where you are coming from or where you are heading, you will leave FDD in breathtaking custom creations that reflect the confident sparkle of a woman who has truly arrived.

FDD Offers Swarovski Crystal Bracelet to Benefit MedStar Maryland Melanoma Center

bracelet

Faye Daniel Designs (FDD) is delighted to announce that we are partnering with the MedStar Maryland Melanoma Center to offer a one-of-a-kind Swarovski crystal bracelet in the strikingly elegant shade of silver night. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the MedStar Maryland Melanoma Center. The design, which may be set in your choice of antique copper, gold, silver or antique silver metal plated chain, is a collaboration between FDD founder and lead designer Randie McConnell and Felice Repas, a close friend of Randie and a melanoma survivor.

According to the American Cancer Society, cancer of the skin is by far the most common of all cancers. While melanoma accounts for less than 5% of skin cancer cases, it is the cause of a majority of skin cancer deaths. The American Cancer Society estimates that, in 2013, 76,690 new melanomas will be diagnosed in the United States and approximately 9,480 people in the United States are expected to die of melanoma.

The risk of melanoma increases with age, but it is not uncommon among people younger than 30. In fact, melanoma is one of the most common cancers in young adults (particularly young women.) Click here to learn about the risk factors for melanoma.

These limited edition Swarovski crystal bracelets are handmade at the FDD studio in Bel Air, Maryland. They will make beautiful holiday gifts that also will raise awareness about early detection and prevention as well as support research to cure the silent killer that is melanoma.

Order on or before November 15 to receive discounted prices of $52 (7” bracelet) and $57 (8” bracelet). Bracelets ordered after November 15 will cost $60 (7” bracelet) and $65 (8” bracelet). Katie Kinslow’s Journey to Mrs. Maryland America 2014

  995981_570601033004422_1039303989_n

by Catherine Frances Butrim

Over this incredible year of 2013, it has been Faye Daniel Designs’ privilege to sponsor and support Mrs. Bel Air Maryland America, Katie Kinslow, on her journey to the Mrs. Maryland America Pageant taking place on Saturday, October 26 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Timonium.

1005099_551363501594842_1101400572_n

Katie, who moved to Bel Air from New Jersey in 2010 with her husband, Jeff, has been an energetic leader in our town long before she won the title of Mrs. Bel Air Maryland America. Armed with her degree in social work and a strong desire to help people using every resource available in the community, Katie began to volunteer with organizations such as the Bel Air Downtown Alliance and the True Housewives of Bel Air almost immediately after her arrival. It wasn’t long before her outstanding contributions caught the eye of Laurett Ellsworth Arenz, executive director of Mrs. Maryland America, who advised Katie to further her volunteering goals by competing for the title of Mrs. Bel Air Maryland America.

1004598_551365448261314_1048256109_n

After winning the title, Katie wasted no time using her newfound influence to connect with local business sponsors and more charitable organizations (often with her toddler, Brayden, in tow), all with the goal of making life better for the Bel Air community.  Every weekend, Katie can be found volunteering and appearing at charitable events for organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Bel Air, In the Glow, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and so many more.

44581_564071856990673_285244069_n

Through her volunteering, Katie also has done much to explode stereotypes about pageant winners. “It’s not about showing up in a gown, sash and crown and posing for a photo op,” says Katie. “I like to get down and dirty when I volunteer.” And Katie did just that when she helped to build a Habitat for Humanity house on Giles Street this summer. “I put on my sweats and helped build a house from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and I was sore for an entire week afterward,” laughs Katie. “But I really love doing the work.”

The cause that is closest to Katie’s heart, however, is the one she has chosen as her pageant platform: breast cancer awareness and prevention. Because her grandmother, mother-in-law and husband’s grandmother are breast cancer survivors, the choice was natural; and Katie has immersed herself in the fight against breast cancer as a Komen Maryland Ambassador and by recently hosting a stylishly successful fundraiser for the Kaufman Cancer Center, which is located at Upper Chesapeake.

Faye Daniel Designs is honored to have styled Katie’s jewelry and accessories for many events in 2013, including her big night this Saturday. Along with all of Bel Air, we will be proudly cheering her on to the title, and we will be looking forward to a busy year styling Katie’s accessories for what would undoubtedly be an amazing and dynamic reign as Mrs. Maryland America 2014.

FDD’s Wedding Accessory Q&A

With the seemingly endless and often stressful list of tasks to complete before the big day arrives, many brides may be tempted to call their wedding ensemble complete when they have secured the dress. But the addition of a few key accessories can up the glamor quotient considerably and transform a simply pretty wedding gown into the dress of your dreams. FDD’s founder and lead designer, Randie McConnell, answers a few frequently asked questions to make the often bewildering choice of wedding jewelry and accessories a breeze for confused brides.

Why should I consult with an accessory stylist/designer for my wedding?

Randie: An accessory designer or stylist has the expertise to advise a bride and help choose the accessories that will take a specific wedding dress and a bride’s entire look to the next level tastefully. A designer or stylist also can create a custom look that will express a bride’s theme or vision for her wedding day. For example, a designer can create one-of-a-kind seashell jewelry and hair accessories that can make the ever popular beach wedding theme a completely unique expression of an individual bride’s personal style. A designer also can help make the choice of accessories easier for a bride who doesn’t have clear vision of what will work best for her and the gown she has chosen.

When is it appropriate to choose statement jewelry and accessories for my wedding?

Randie: A bride should choose subtler accessories if she is wearing an embellished beaded dress. She can, however, choose fabulous statement earrings to wear with a beaded gown. A statement necklace is perfect for a simple unembellished or lace wedding gown, and statement hairpieces work beautifully with more elaborate wedding gowns as long as the jewelry is subtle.

What if I am on a tight budget and cannot afford expensive accessories?

Randie: Accessory alternatives are always available at FDD for the bride on a budget. If a bride cannot afford expensive statement earrings, FDD represents several jewelry lines that offer the same visual impact at less cost. FDD can always provide for the needs of our brides because we work with many different products and manufacturers. And it’s always better to work with a designer who can recommend one knockout accessory than it is to purchase several accessories that will not be up to a bride’s quality standards for the most important day of her life.

When should I schedule my wedding accessory consultation?

Randie: FDD’s motto is “You bring the dress, we do the rest…from head to toe.” Before a consultation, I always ask our brides to bring the dress or photos of the dress, shoes, photos of their hair design and even their Pinterest boards, so I can understand the aspirations they have for their wedding day and then bring that vision to breathtaking reality with our accessory designs.

Call FDD at 410-879-9925, email studio@fayedanieldesigns.com or visit Schedulicity to book your wedding accessory consultation.

FDD Thinks Pink for Weddings and Breast Cancer Awareness

by Catherine Frances Butrim

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the annual drive to encourage women (and men, too) to be proactive about detecting the disease in its early stages has kicked into high gear among public service organizations, medical associations and businesses, including the wedding industry. According to BREASTCANCER.ORG, about 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, and many engaged couples are choosing to honor loved ones who are affected by this disease (we all know someone who is) at their wedding celebrations. Thanks to this powerful annual campaign to beat breast cancer, pink has officially taken its place among the brilliant palette of colors for October weddings. FDD has assembled a few ways to use the power of pink to pack a beautiful visual punch at your wedding and sock it to breast cancer all at the same time.

The Blushing Bride

Blush pink and brides are a natural combination, and a vast array of bridal gowns in this soft and subtle shade are becoming more readily available at bridal boutiques. Brides feeling somewhat bolder may opt for gowns and shoes in coral, fuschia and (be still our hearts!) Barbie pink. White gowns with pink accessories, such as bouquets, belts, sashes, jewelry and shoe embellishments (FDD offers them all!), are always popular choices for pink brides who want to maintain a more traditional tone.

When the wedding is over, you can donate your dress to Brides Against Breast Cancer, an organization that uses wedding gown sales to fund wellness and educational programs for those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer.

Pink Bridal Parties

Your bridesmaids and flower girl will be visions of pink loveliness and joy as they cascade down the aisle in dress and accessory hues that may range from pale pink to rose to raspberry. The groom, groomsmen and ring bearer will look debonair in pink ties and vests, boutonnieres with pink blooms or pink ribbon lapel pins.

Pink Tabletops and Cake Confections

Pink linens, china and centerpieces are timeless and lovely choices for any wedding table. Top it off with a pink ruffled cake, pink cupcakes or a pink ribbon ice sculpture, and your Think Pink theme will be positively divine.

Pink Drinks

Choose pink signature drinks, such as the pink Bellini, pink champagne and pink lemonade, and name them in celebration of your loved ones.

Pink Favors

Offer pink favors that will raise your guests’ awareness and encourage them to donate to organizations that support breast cancer research. In lieu of favors, you may make a donation to an organization like Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

FDD Partners with Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America to Offer Swarovski Crystal Bracelet

il_570xN_500948876_cei5Faye Daniel Designs (FDD) is proud and delighted to announce its partnership with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) to offer a one-of-a-kind Swarovski crystal bracelet in the vibrant blue, purple and orange hues that represent CCFA.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit CCFA, an organization that is very close to FDD founder Randie McConnell’s heart, as she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 11. “This is a very personal way to give back to a foundation that is helping so many people living with these diseases,” says Randie.

According to CCFA, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are both major categories of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which affect an estimated 1.4 million Americans. These chronic diseases run in families and affect males and females equally. While IBD can affect anyone, Caucasians are more likely than other ethnic groups to have IBD, but these conditions also are prevalent in Jews of European descent (Ashkenazi Jews) and African-Americans. Hispanics in the U.S. also are increasingly affected by IBD. The causes of IBD are still unknown and, despite continual development of promising new treatments, there still is no cure.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract and may affect any part from the mouth to the anus. Read more about the signs and symptoms of Crohn’s disease at CCFA.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory condition limited to the colon, otherwise known as the large intestine. Read more about the signs and symptoms of ulcerative colitis at CCFA.

il_570xN_500948878_m2tn

Each Swarovski crystal bracelet is handmade at the FDD studio in Bel Air, Maryland and will make a meaningful gift and a loving tribute that will truly make a difference to family members and friends who are coping with these debilitating diseases.

Bracelet cost is $38 and the Swarovski crystals may be set in your choice of gold, silver, rose gold or antique brass.  To order, mail the pictured order form with check payment to Faye Daniel Designs, 1600 Lynndale Court, Bel Air, MD 21014 or order online at the Faye Daniel Designs Etsy shop.

Place your order for someone special today and get involved in CCFA’s search for a cure!
